World Book Day 2021
- Every day, nearly 2 million people read a book, but 3.4 million read every day but a book.
This means that nearly three million people a day are not reading, yet most readers believe that books are still a part of their life and have yet to completely give up reading altogether.
A survey commissioned for World Book Day 2021 reveals how much reading means to us all and how we stand by the written word, despite the digital age.
Speaking about the importance of books in his autobiography, author Sir Michael Morpurgo said: “If you want to be someone like Mozart, one day, then read books, lots of them. Each step he took in his search for music was new, mysterious, exciting and you follow every step along the way.”
It is clear that despite the inevitable advancements in technology and media, books are still valued, and it is vital that we continue to support the writers who create them.
The survey of 2,204 readers found that 93% believe reading a book gives you the opportunity to immerse yourself in a world far removed from today’s world and be in someone else’s shoes.
The majority of those surveyed said they believe reading a book is important, with 99% saying that reading makes you better at thinking, understanding and making decisions.
A book brings back the mind of a child, the survey found, and it is important to be given the opportunity to spend time in a world that is imaginary but grounded in reality.
This is reflected in the multitude of books published each year and whether you like fiction or non-fiction, there is something for you.
Books allow readers to travel to another land and to let someone else take the wheel in their life and write their story.
They have a history of more than 10,000 years and books have helped people understand the world and themselves.
Anyone who has read a book can understand why people would like to read more. It makes you better at everything that you do.
Author Hugh Howey wrote in his book How To Build A Wolf – “I started out as a child on my bedroom floor with a flashlight and a book, then eventually graduated to a red flashlight and a yellow book with plastic pages… When I look back on my life, I can see that each book I read helped to make me who I am.”
World Book Day 2021 is on Friday, April 23.

Headteachers share why they want to celebrate World Book Day in their school
Dennis Norman, Preston School, Lancashire
In the 21st century, reading in schools is about promoting literacy. In the 21st century, children should not have to spend hours in the library to have access to books, and books need to be accessible to all.
When children become aware of the world around them, they will feel empowered, motivated and inspired to choose positive alternatives and live more independently.
World Book Day is about raising awareness that every child can read and write well, and that reading is a wonderful experience.
By celebrating World Book Day in schools, we encourage children to understand the importance of reading for pleasure, and share their experiences.
We want to share with our school community, the simple joy of reading, as well as help children to develop the lifelong literacy skills they need to read and write well.
Bringing World Book Day to our school community is a fantastic way to encourage our students to become more confident readers and writers.
